We were the Design Engineer for the structural seismic retrofit design of the historic School of the Arts, constructed in 1926. The two- and four-story complex is the only example of Spanish colonial revival style in the Civic Center area. Highly ornamented with terra cotta tile, it has four major components; the main school, a gymnasium, an auditorium, and a library. The structures are non-ductile reinforced concrete. We analyzed, designed, and detailed the terra cotta veneer lateral seismic retrofit, and designed concrete shear walls and steel braces for seismic loading.
